Welcome to the Mexiko project of the BG|BRG Purkersdorf. On this Site you learn something about the eating habits of Austrians and Mexicans and Austrian and Mexican food and drinks in general. Furthermore there’s a comparison of the religious holidays in Mexico and Austria.

This project was accomplished by the students of the BG|BRG Purkersdorf and the Mexican students which spent a week in Austria because of a student exchange project between these two countries. The topics were worked out by Mexican and Austrian pupils and the website was created by the students of the Wahlpflichtfach Informatik.

Mexiko

Alegria
Alegria is a candy made out of honey and corn.

Churros
Churros are candys made out of a paste of honey and chocolate.

Calaveras de azucar
Calaveras de azucar are made out of pure sugar and are usually only eaten by mexicans.

Austria Apfelstrudel Apfelstrudel is a common dessert in Austria made out of filo dough and apples.
Chocolate Chocolate is, as well as in Mexico, probably the most eaten sweet in Austria. Even the trademark Milka is known in Mexico.
Sachertorte Sachertorte is the most popular pie in Austria, it is made by hotel Sacher since a long time ago.
Kaiserschmarrn und Palatschinken Kaiserschmarrn and Palatschinken are made out of flour, eggs, milk and sugar. They are very sweet and it depends on the thickness if you get Kaiserschmarrn or Palatschinken.

International Cooking

In Austria and also in Mexico everybody has tried international food; it is very common going to international restaurants to eat some foreign food.

Mexico and Austria have a lot of international food in common:

fast food: McDonalds, Pizza and Sandwiches to go
restaurants like Italian, Chinese, Japanese
drinks (especially soft-drinks like coca-cola)

Typical Austrian and Mexican international food are for example:

Spaghetti	Greek Salad

Spring rolls	Tacos, Tortillas

Hamburgers	Muffin

Sushi	Swiss Chocolate

Pizza

Although there are a few differences between Mexican and Austrian international food habits:

Austria: Greek food (tzaziki, gyros, souvlaki…) is very famous, but in Mexico just a few people know it.
Mexico: the Cuban food is very popular and everybody likes to eat it for lunch.

–> because of the geographical position (Greece is as near to Austria as Cuba to Mexico) austrians and mexicans eat this special food more often.

In Austria we have lots of traditional and famous food and drinks

Below there are some of the most popular and delicious dishes from our country

Wiener Schnitzel	Kaiserschmarren	Fleischknödel

The Wiener Schnitzel is traditionally prepared from a thinly-sliced piece of veal. Potatoe salad and lemon slice are almost always served as side dishes.

Kaiserschmarrn is one of the best known Austrian desserts. Its a caramelized pancake with more eggs than usual. The pancake is split into peaces while frying, sprinkled with powdered sugar and is served hot with an apple or plum sauce

Fleischknödel are dumplings made out of dough which contains potatoes, meal, grit and butter. The dump is usually filled with meat.

Bier is one of the world oldest alcoholic beverages. Traditional beers in Austria are Stiegel, Gösser, Otterkringer …

Wein is an alcohlic beverage produced by the fermentation of the juice of fruits. Traditional whines in Austria are Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkischer…

Wasser is a staple food in Austria. In our country it’s very clear and healthy if it flews from the alpes

Mexico

Christmas Eve:
It’s one of the most important holidays in Mexiko.
That night all the family meet together to have the dinner. They used to eat turkey, salda, pasta, and two famous dishes called BACALAO and ROMERITOS. They also used to drink SIDRA, natural drinks like lemonade, or horchata, and the PONCHE, and also coke. As desert there are cakes, ice cream, but there are als lots of ttypical deserts which you can choose.


Calndelaria It’s another trataditional holiday. Everyone who has found a baby in the bread (picture), must bring something to eat on de February 2th that is were this holiday take place. The most famous dishes are the tamales and the hot chocolate.


Birthdays: People used to build a piNata and full it with candies, and also fruits like orange and peanuts most. And during the celebrations, people used to eat TAMALES, jelly and obviously cake.


Day of Deaths Mexican people celebrate it in November 2th. That day, families used to build an ALTAR, that are tables with a picture in the centre of the one who died, and his /her favourite food, like fruits, typical candies, drinks, and his/her favourite objects around. Also in that holiday, everybody eats “Pan de Muerto (deaths bread) that is a bred covered with sugar and tastes really delicious.

Austria

Christmas Eve: In Austria we eat mostly fish on Christmas Eve. But some people eat also turkey or other food. We have also christmas trees with lots of sweets.

Easter: To Easter we eat colored eggs, bread, ham and sweets which parents hid in the gardens for their children.

St. Martin (Martini): We celebrate this day on november 11th. Lots of people eat a cooked goose. The children (most in the Kindergarten) make latern and go throw the town and sing songs („Ich geh mit meiner Laterne…“).

Birthday: To birthdays we eat a cake and the person who has birthday gets presents. (–> Food at Parties)

Mexiko:

One of the most famous alcohol drink is Tequila. This drink come from a place names „Taquila Jalisco“. Most common tequilas have 38% to 40% alcohol.
Another drink calles Jamaica and is very popular , because it is one of several cheap, healthy and refreshing drinks typically made from fresh juices or extracts. His name comes from a red flowers names Jamaica.
Horchata is made of rice. While the drink is usually white and „milky“, some recipes call for milk, and others do not. Other ingredients often include sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, orange or lime.

Austria:

One of the popular soft drink is Almdudler. It only exist here. The slogan of the Almdudler ad campaign is very well known in Austria: Wann die kan Almdudler ham, gemma wieder ham! (English: If they don’t have an Almdudler, we’ll go back home!)
A famous energy drink calls Red Bull. Initially, Red Bull created a strategic program to provide „cool“ post-secondary students with free cases of the drink, and then convince them to throw a party.
In Austria also lots of peopel drinks vine. We have lots of graps garden here and with the graps we produce red and green vine.
We drink lots of alcopops like Eristoff and Bacardi of parties. This drink includes lots of sugar and have 4–7% alcohol volume.

Breakfast

Austria:
In Austria most people don’t eat anything or eat nearly nothing for breakfast during the week, only some fruits, toasts (with ham, cheese or jam) or cornflakes.
	At weekends most Austrians eat more copiously for breakfast. They eat ham and eggs, fried eggs, bread, toasts, cornflakes, fruits, omelettes, cakes, pastry and much more. They drink juices (mostly orange juice), coffee and tea.

Mexico:
	In Mexico students only drink at home some milk or juice and later in school they eat chilaquiles,quesadillas, eggs, beans, molletes, etc.
On weekends mexican students eat mostly the same things as during the week, but they also drink coffee.
Mexican adults use to have breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.

Austria:

In Austria normaly we eat popcorn, chips, snacks, cakes and chocolate at parties. We drink coke, juices and sometimes alcohol.We also like it if we burn meat in the garden under fire.

Mexico

In Mexiko people love it when the can choose from many sorts of food like tostadas and tacos. They also have Popcorns and coke at their paarties ,but they more like the wilder and harder foods and drinks like Tacos and the Sauce that is call Salsa or Tekila.

Parties:

XV years party:

InMexico we have a very good party for girls, named: “XV years”. We do a very big party where we invite our all family and friends. Before the celebration we go to church and the priest does a mass only for you.The girl has to use a big dress and she has to look very well to the other people. And at the party she dances Vals with her friends, then all people eat something and when they finished they can dance. In that party we eat “barbacoa”, beans, “tinga”, and sometimes prefer to eat food from other countries. And if they want, they give some alcohol.

Typical Mexican food at Parties:

Tostadas: Tostadas are like flat tacos that are usually made by layering frijoles (refried beans) on op of a fried, flat corn tortilla and then adding a variety of different toppings, like meat, lettuce, guacamole, cheese and salsa. They’re colorful. They’re festive. They’re easy to make and perfect for a casual spring or summer Mexican dinner buffet.
	Salsas:Salsas or Salsa is the most basic dish in any Mexican food meal, often served as an appetizer with chips and used to jazz up everything from eggs to main courses. Salsas can be made from fresh, raw vegetables or cooked. Every Mexican food chef has their own particular way of making salsa. No two are ever alike! Basic ingredients are chiles, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and spices.
Tacos:It seems like tacos are everyone’s first introduction to Mexican food. Initially, the only kind of tacos to be found this side of the border were made from ground beef. (Boring!) Now there is a myriad of meat, poultry and seafood fillings for tacos.
	Barbacoa: Barbacoa generally refers to meats or a whole sheep slow cooked over an open fire, or more traditionally, in a pit covered with leaves. Barbacoa de cabeza is a specialty of slow cooked cow head that arose in the ranching lands of northern Mexico after the Spanish conquest.
